"Lady-Like" tattoo By Robert Klara

As a mother of three, Shelly Coffman didn't really have a ton of extra time to become a "mompreneur," but she did. And with her MBA and an extensive background in securities law, it wasn’t exactly logical to go into a business with a product historically linked with sailors and convicts, but she did that, too.

Coffman recently rolled out a collection of what she calls "Lady-Like Tattoos" under her brand name, Poppy Drops.

Full disclosure, here: They're just temporary tattoos—but that’s actually the whole point. "These tattoos were designed with me in mind," said Coffman. "I’d always wanted a tattoo, and I’d always chickened out. So this was born out of my desire to have an option. Say you’d like to have a tattoo, but you work in a profession where you [can’t]. You can wear this on the weekend if you’re feeling a little edgy and still take it off before the business meeting on Monday."

Of course, there are plenty of temporary tattoos out there. But Coffman found them all to be too large, too masculine or just too juvenile to suit women's tastes. (Examples: Hello Kitty sells a temporary tattoo combo for $6, and Earth Henna will sell you an entire Body Painting Kit for about $24.) That’s when Coffman saw an opening in the marketplace for what she calls "a more dainty, demure tattoo" for ladies only.

Poppy Drops features three collections, each a diminutive flourish of stars, birds or hearts, and each priced at $6.95. There's also a collection of script words—a popular tattoo sub trend. And since all of Coffman’s tattoos are made with 100 percent food-grade vegetable dye, "if you have sensitive skin, you don’t have to be worried," she said.

While Poppy Drops is creating a new body-art niche for women, the line is actually an offshoot of Coffman's original tattoo collection for girls. "I developed it as a solution to a problem a lot of moms face," she said. "Their little ones want to get their ears pierced, and there’s no great alternative." Her resulting kids collection—designed to be worn on the earlobe but is suitable for anyplace on the skin—includes ladybugs and mermaids.

Most of Coffman's sales currently come through her website, but Poppy Drops is ready to ink a deal with a major retail chain (one Coffman prefers not to name) and also just got picked up by e-tailer Daily Grommet. "This product is a problem solver," said the site’s senior community manager Tori Tait. "Moms like them because they’re not permanent, and kids like the styles." Daily Grommet plans to stock the Lady-Like tattoos at some point in the near future.

Meanwhile, it looks like there are plenty of women who, like Coffman, would love to have a tattoo—so long as it washes off.

Could there possibly be a better tattoo to celebrate ModBlog’s new superfast servers that Jon set up for us last night? I know how happy it makes me as someone who used to have to wait minutes for edits to my entries to be accepted, so I hope it makes you happy as a reader as well.

I’m also really happy to see that tattoo artists have been posting more healed work lately, showing the public what they’re really capable of. If this trend continues, it will really separate the great tattoo artists from people who are simply great artists. Just because someone can paint doesn’t mean they can lay in a tattoo that will look good for your lifetime (as you may recall from the controversial entry on tattoo fading and a couple followup entries). I’m very happy to point out that California-based tattoo artist Cory Norris (corynorrisart.com) is more than capable of doing both. Even though this photo of Ricky’s chest that he did looks like it was taken the day it was done, it’s actually fully healed in this picture, even though the blacks are deep, the red flames are incredibly vibrant, the shading in the clouds is still rich and you can make out the ghostly seething skulls inside, but the touch I really like is the deep red glow inside the eyes of the skull in the train’s engine, as if it has hellish glowing coal embers for brains.

Thanks again to Cory Norris  let’s hope top artists keep on posting healed work, really letting the world know who can be trusted to implant art that will last a lifetime  not just win you a “best of show” tattoo convention plaque and then fade out a month later. But they say that the man responsible for the crazed tattoo trend among celebrities started because of a man called Lyle Tuttle. To those of you who don’t know him, Lyle Tuttle is a tattoo artist born and raised in California. Currently 81 years old, he retired from the world of tattooing in the year 1990, but during his active years (from 1945 to 1990), he tattooed a big number of celebrities, and the one who started it all: Janis Joplin.

The acceptance of tattoos as a form of art started by the work of Lyle Tuttle on Janis Joplin. He did a small wristlet and a heart close to her breast, and at this moment celebrities started to get hooked with tattoos. Lyle went on and tattooed other famous celebrities, such as Cher, Jane Fonda, and Paul Stanley, just to name a few.

The adoption of tattoos among celebrities helped put tattoos into the spotlight: T.V Shows, clothing lines, books, magazines, and many other publications started to shift into the tattoo world and its culture, giving celebrities a chance to express their views and thoughts on tattoos, and also sharing their pieces with their audience.

Today, tattoos are not only limited to recording artists, musicians and rappers. Actors and actresses everywhere have sat down and spent hours of work on their own pieces. Angelina Jolie was one of the first women to show off her ink in red carpet events, and slowly more and more followed.

Tattoo fans and enthusiasts have decorated their bodies with incredible pieces of art, some even of their own idols, and as every day more and more people are getting tattooed, hopefully one day all the discrimination and laws and rules against them in work places and companies will stop, as they’re a form of art and an expression of what we love and cherish.

Getting Heavily Tattooed Teen Boys

There’s debate-inviting interview up on the 2KBT clothing blog that I have quite mixed feelings about an interview with a 15-year old covered in tattoos. Tattoos that unlike those you’ll find on most 15 year olds, are at least slightly above scratcher level, although still far from the quality level I’d wish on anyone I was going to ask how he affords this level of tattooing, but I doubt they were costly. I admit I started getting tattooed about that same age, but it’s hard to compare the experience directly since in the 80s it was a different world, one that began with me and a hand-poked needle and was followed by being tattooed out of his apartment by an artistically-minded friend who’d just gotten out of jail and ordered himself a Huck Spaulding kit. As you can imagine, those tattoos have almost all been covered up. Even if I had access to better quality tattooists, I’m not sure that at fifteen I had enough perspective on my life to choose tattoos that I’d be happy with today. Very few of us have the same tastes at fifteen as at thirty or forty. Of course, I wasn’t a whole lot more mature at 18 or 21 either, I don’t think it was until I was maybe 23 that I personally had the maturity to choose appropriate tattoos for myself and my life which is part of the reason I waited until I was thirty to do my face tattoo. For some people that age is higher and for others it’s lower But I doubt for many people it’s as low as 15.

Still, I dislike ageism as much as I dislike all forms of prejudice I don’t like the idea of strangers in some government office telling me or anyone how old they have to be to be able to manage their life. That kind of misguided protectionism has often resulted in kids who are handed responsibility at 18 and rush into it, just as incapable of handling it as they would have been at 15, but with a whole lot more self-righteousness. Well, as I’ve said elsewhere, people get the tattoos they deserve. All we can do is continue publishing information on what good tattoos should look like and how to find a good artist that information is widely available and any kid with basic internet access and a modicum of self-respect is perfectly capable of doing the research these days… All that said, if I was a tattoo artist, I don’t think I would be ethically comfortable tattooing someone at fifteen that I didn’t know extremely, extremely well. A sleeve to the wrist is starting to cut off some options in life I wonder what would happen if the kid decided he wanted his face or his neck tattooed? It’s not a big step in today’s world for a kid to think that might be a cool thing to do. Even without worrying about tattoo-bigotry, it’s a very big load to put on someone if their tastes change, a sleeve and a chest is a lot to steal from them.

I don’t think there’s any easy or definitive answer here — I don’t think there’s a universal age where someone is mature enough for tattoos, and personally, the less the government sticks its nose into body modification the better. Responsible artists, a community that strives to educate newcomers, and a general culture of self-respect seems like the right way to tackle this issue.

I have no idea what their local laws are or if this interview will come back to bite them in the ass — they seem to be part of that grimey lower-echelon of tattoo shops that prey on less discerning customers, at best a stepping stone for learning artists, but unlikely a home to artists whose work is likely to get much press beyond this sort of shocked “can you believe this crap” coverage…

Yesterday I was mentioning how amputees often use their unique anatomy to get great tattoos that only their body is truly suited for here’s another superb example, Jason’s tattoo done by Yancy Miller of World of Body Works in Lafayette, Louisiana. Of course this is a design that has been done on plenty of people with complete limbs, but a mechanical anatomy tattoo is somehow much, much more effective when its design echoes the prosthetic limb right next to it!

Suspension Tattoo Job Offer

I got a message from Mike Hill at Broad Street Studio (broadstreetstudio.co.uk) in Bath, Somerset, UK telling me that they’re looking for a new tattoo artist at their studio and asking me whether I’d be willing to post a job ad for him… I told him I couldn’t really do that, but if he could find something interesting for me to post, well, as they say, “one hand washes the other”… So he got me some pictures of a recent scar he did on Tam Smith. Unlike most skin removal scars over tattoos, this is over a Japanese sleeve, rather than over blackwork, and the negative-space it creates interacts with the tattoo rather than standing solo. At first I’d assumed this was a tattoo on a fishing enthusiast, but it’s actually a flesh hook as Tam is part of the suspension community.

While Shannon is still out I wanted to drop in with a photo that was submitted to BME yesterday.  I found it quite beautiful and wanted to share.

This was sent in by Pink_Jonka in Croatia.  There is something so serene about it.  While I’ve never suspended, I have been there for several suspension events and there has always been something really beautiful about the atmosphere, the way everyone comes together and supports one another, that I really love.

Tattooing on a Baby

An incredibly disturbing video probably the most offensive tattoo video to date is currently doing the viral rounds. In it, the tattoo artist (whose face we never see), tattoos what appears to be a small “666″ on a toddler that screams in pain and terror while he’s doing it. A woman that I assume is the mother is holding the child down the whole time. Since there is parental consent in the process, it is 100% legal. Arguably this isn’t any worse than the doctors that have have cut off the ends of millions if not billions of baby boys’ penises to satisfy their parents religious or cultural leanings, and of course there are indigenous cultures (many of them idolized by the “modern primitive” movement) all around the world that do a wide variety of heavy mods on babies and children… But wow… I don’t think I could bring myself to be involved in something like this, either as the artist or the parent. But I wonder how many of you who are willing to denounce this video are also willing to denounce the tribal cultures who do similar things in much larger quantities and to a more horrific extent, or even denounce circumcision which is still commonplace in America (although not many other Western nations at this point as the cruelty and needlessness is recognized)?

Trying to find examples of tattooed children in Western culture, I was hoping to dig up an old story in BME’s old newspaper archive of historical mod stories because I remembered one about a father taking his identical twin sons to a tattoo artist in order to get a beauty mark tattooed on one of them as a way of telling them apart more easily. Anyway, I couldn’t find the actual article I was searching for, but I did find another from the October 19, 1899 Twin City News which mentions how an increasing number of parents are tattooing their children with a hidden ID mark (I believe this was in the midst of abduction paranoia).

Also, I mentioned above that the parents were “100%” legally in the right (although not ethically in my opinion), but I should point out that there have been cases for example, this North Carolina mother arrested after allowing her 11 year-old to get a tattoo of a small heart on her shoulder that suggest the opposite. However, courts in America are very unlikely to call the actions of an established religion “child abuse”, so don’t expect to see Jews being jailed over circumcision any time soon.

AJ McCarron's Giant Chest Tattoo Is Spreading

It’s back everyone, and it may have developed a life of its own this time.

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron lifted eyebrows around the nation 18 months ago when pictures of him surfaced with a giant, weeping Jesus tattooed on his chest along with the words “Bama Boy” and “Ma” and “Pops." 

The tattoo on McCarron’s chest was originally about the size of a football, appropriately enough, but the ink seems to be growing with a life of its own.

Pictures were recently posted online of McCarron hanging out with his friends this past summer that show the many additions the star quarterback had made to his chest-canvas since it was last seen in public.

So far, from what we can tell from our many hours of intense (if not involuntary) analyzing of McCarron’s tattoos in the B/R lab, the additions to his tattoo include the words “Home Team,” “God in Control” and the letters “MVP.”

Also, a dangling cross has been added to the bottom of the work, along with a peppering of stars, stripes and billowy cloud etchings around the periphery of the tattoo.

The result is a “God’s Country Meets Iron Man” kind of energy core across the young quarterback's torso.

We don’t know if he plans on extending his ink any further, but if the Crimson Tide wins the BCS title tonight, I wouldn’t be surprised to see AJ McCarron with the Coach’s Trophy or an image titled “Nick Saban Getting a Gatorade Shower From the Holy Ghost” inked on this ribs next time he takes off his shirt.
